Statement:
Nanaimo Cruise ship terminal project
Today Member of Parliament James Lunney issued the following statement:
Last September I was pleased to join with the Nanaimo Port Authority and announce funding for the creation of the Nanaimo Cruise ship Terminal. This is a project that the Government of Canada is proud to invest in, as it will create local jobs, support the local economy and boost the region's tourism industry.
This is an important project for the entire mid Vancouver Island that should move forward, and it is unfortunate that the Nanaimo Port Authority and the First Nations community could not reach an agreement to allow the project to proceed as planned. I am hopeful the issues can be resolved promptly.
I have confirmed that the Government of Canada will continue to conduct the environmental assessment in the event that the issues are resolved between the Port and First Nations community. The environmental assessment is not stalling the project, and the Government of Canada remains committed to this project.
