Welcome
to the beautiful riding of Nanaimo-Alberni on Vancouver Island.
Our constituency contains some of the most magnificent scenery in
Canada, including the northern half of Nanaimo, the beachside communities
of Parksville and Qualicum, the city of Port Alberni and the west
coast villages of Bamfield, Tofino and Ucluelet. Throughout the
area,
island life is enhanced by the unique cultures of our historic First
Nation communities.
Known
the world over for its pristine wilderness, mild climate and recreational
opportunities, Nanaimo-Alberni is the only Federal Constituency in
Canada with two UNESCO-designated Biosphere Reserves.
Nanaimo, called the Harbour City, is the transportation hub of the
Island and its second largest city. Centrally located on the
east coast, Nanaimo boasts one of the best climates in Canada with
year round outdoor activities and a vibrant economic and cultural
atmosphere. It is a superb destination for conventions, business
meetings, sporting events and has one of the most beautiful waterfronts
in the country.
North
of Nanaimo, from Nanoose Bay to Bowser, we have the oceanside communities,
including the city of Parksville and the town of Qualicum Beach. As
a favourite holiday destination, the area contains spectacular beaches,
marinas, and world-class golf opportunities.
Surrounding the oceanside communities and extending to the 6000 foot
summit of Mount Arrowsmith, discover the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere
Reserve, the 800-year-old Douglas Fir trees of Cathedral Grove, crystal
clear
lakes
and waterfalls, and an abundance of flora and fauna. Residents and
visitors alike can enjoy hiking, fishing, kayaking and a host of other
eco-adventures.
Port Alberni, known as the "Salmon Capital of the World,"
is a waterside city where marine and forest activities share space
with beautiful provincial parks, waterfront shops and restaurants.
This active community is located at the foot of the Alberni Inlet,
which provides a marine link to the Pacific Ocean and the spectacular
West Coast of Vancouver Island.
On the southern rim of Barkley Sound is the community of Bamfield,
where much of lifes daily business is dependent upon the sea.
Rich in marine life, the area is also popular with sports fishermen,
kayakers and hikers. The famous
West
Coast Trail commences here on its way south to Port Renfrew.
Bamfield has also been called the heart of Barkley Sound and gateway
to the Broken Island Group, a haven for kayakers.
At the end of the road, twin peninsulas are home to the charming coastal
communities of Tofino and Ucluelet. Both recognized international
tourist destinations provide service and access to the awe-inspiring
and unforgettable beauty of Long Beach, the Pacific Rim National Park,
and the Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Reserve. Adventure tours, whale
watching, storm watching, fishing and surfing are some of the popular
pastimes for local citizens and visitors to the area.
